LaVerkin Creek in Kolob Canyon Area
In early June, honoring an annual indulgence,
I spent two weeks hiking in Utah with friends who are certifiable red desert rats.

While my aversion to crowds has usually nudged me to drive past Zion,
This museum of geological marvels can’t honestly be ignored.
If you get up early enough in midsummer, you can still have the jeweled places all to yourselves.
The monsoon season is coming early to the Southwest this year.
Sparking black clouds augment the splendor beyond adjectives.

People have lived within 20 miles of Capitol Reef for their whole lives and can still discover treasures they’ve never seen.
The Escalante, preserved for all Americans by President Clinton, is an exotic dancer.
As the canyons constantly twist and curl, the veil shifts and a new marvel appears.
The cascade of visual glories reminds us that
Even our most extravagant imagination
Falls shy of the reality before us.
Naturally, all of these beautiful places go very nicely with Salamandre Wine!
We decant it into an unbreakable Nalgene bottle when we head into the rocks.

Primitivo, of course.
Coyote Cuvée…indeed!
Sauvignon Blanc…in a blink!
Malbec…if you’re feeling frisky.
Pinot…if you’re feeling blissful.
Chardonnay…pursuit of happiness.

Utah doesn’t show off too many real salamanders, but the lizards are magnificent!
